But, leave it to Vince Carter to steal the spotlight. Carter told reporters after the game that he has recently become engaged to a long-time friend and soon-after girlfriend, he first met on a trip to the University of North Carolina campus as a high-school senior. Not only that, but his connection to one-time Tar Heel teammate and the man he was traded for on draft night in 1998, Antawn Jamison continues. Ellen, the apple of Vince’s eye, is actually the sister -in-law of Jamison. Carter re-united with his sweetheart at Jamison’s wedding early this summer. He proposed a few days ago and she accepted. ”Hey, when I’m hurting now, I have a chiropractor,” said the blushing Carter. She is a successful chiropractor with her own practice in South Carolina. As Carter tells it, he is marrying into a family full of doctors, orthodontists and the like. Reporters joked with him, saying that would make he and Jamison the “black sheep” of the family. The wedding is set for July, so congratulations to Vince Carter, but make no mistake, this was Bosh’s night. The Raptor rookie was understandably nervous when he entered the game four minutes into the first,but after a mean, two-handed dunk off an Alvin Williams pass he settled in nicely and, despite a few rookie slips, established himself as an integral part of the team throughout the game. “The dunk gave me a chance to get the nerves out with a bit of a uthority,”said Bosh. “At the start, I had a bit of nerves and I had to figure out where I belonged on the court. By the end of he game,I was able to figure that out.” Bosh finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds, but the big highlight came four minutes into the fourth quarter. The Wizards Juan Dixon picked up a Raptor turnover and bolted toward his own basket with nothing but daylight between he and the goal. Bosh quickly gained ground on him and swatted away the attempt hard with the kind of block Raptor fans could undoubtedly get used to. Kevin O’Neill was impressed, but not surprised by his rookie. He played very well. He got a little tired in the fourth. He had a breakaway and lost his footing and had a post-up and lost the ball so he got a little tired,” said the coach. “But obviously he’s going to be a good player. He can do some good things. I thought him and Moiso both had big-time hustle play blocks which wins games for you sometimes so I was happy with that.” Lamond Murray made his first appearance in a Raptor uniform since a freak foot injury in last year’s preseason opener kept him out of action the entire season, but he looked none the worse for wear. Murray finished with a team-high 14 points and was clearly the held the most poise throughout the contest. “I’m just trying to get my feel for the game back right now,” shrugged Murray “That’s what preseason is for.” After one, next to meaningless game in the preseason, the Raptors look to be exactly as billed. Wednesday night they got after it on defence, outscored the visitors in the paint by twelve and ran no fewer than 2 set plays on offence.
