The Astros, amid much clamoring and off to stunning first-place start despite a current four-game losing streak, have selected the contract of shortstop Carlos Correa, their top prospect and perhaps the No. 1 prospect in all of baseballalong with Byron Buxton following the call-ups of Kris Bryant and Addison Russell. The Astros certainly have nothing to lose. Current shortstop Marwin Gonzalez has an OPS of .586, while Correa, who will now be the youngest player in the majors at just 20, was hitting at Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Fresno. Between the two levels, he posted a line of .332/.404/.602 with 10 homers, 18 stolen bases, 21 doubles and a 26/39 strikeout/walk ratio, showing uncommon plate discipline for a player so young. He had slowed somewhat since reaching Triple-A (.266/.336/.447), but the Astros felt the time was right, for Correa and the team. We really feel like he can help our club right now win ballgames, Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told BA correspondent Jose de Jesus Ortiz. We scuffled a little bit in these last few days, and we feel like Carlos gives us a boost. The call-up comes three years to the day the Astros and Luhnowin his first draft as GM took Correa No. 1 overall as a 17-year-old from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. Correa is the third player from that Astros draft class to be called up this year, joining righthander Lance McCullers and outfielder Preston Tucker. SCOUTING REPORT At 6-foot-4, Correa will be one of the bigger shortstops in the game and hes noticeably thicker and broader than when he signed, not uncommon for a player drafted at 17 whos had three years to mature under the auspices of a major league organization. What is uncommon is his plate discipline (132/211 walk/strikeout ratio as a pro) as well as his maturity. The Astros and scouts whove seen Correa have no doubt hell meld easily into an MLB clubhouse, and hes a player with the charisma and propensity for leadership, once he has settled in. As far as on-the-field actions, Correa is projected to have 30-homer power as he continues to fill out his frame, and he is tapping into that power better than ever this season, slugging a combined .602 at Corpus Christi and Fresno. One scout likened Correas batting approach to Albert Pujols because of his ability to hammer the ball to the opposite field. A tick below average runner two years ago, Correa now turns in average times consistently. He has stolen 18 of 19 this year, although scouts say thats more attributable to smart baserunning than blazing speed. But so far the concerns that he will slow down as he matures and gets bigger have not happened, in part because Correa has worked extremely diligently at increasing his flexibility and explosiveness. On defense, Correa has a good first step, which helps him overcome average speed, but he has excellent instincts. His double-plus arm and size spur speculation that a move to third base or right field is in the offing as he moves into his late 20s, but the Astros are in no rush to make that happen. WHAT TO EXPECT The Astros did not want to promote Correa without ensuring he would enter a situation that would help him succeed. Unless he falls on his face, you can expect Correa is here to stay. Correas tools are without question and his makeup is plus-plus as well. The Astros would seem to have no concerns about the 20-year-olds ability to hold his own in the majors and in their clubhouse. If hes available in your fantasy league, grab him immediately. He should hit for average, power and add some steals to your fantasy team. --
