With increased velocity and improved stuff, not to mention athletic bloodlines, his name rapidly moved up boards as his senior season unfolded, giving him the chance to be the first Newbury Park High School product to go in the top five rounds since Andrew Lambo was a fourth-rounder back in 2007. The 6-foot-6 Miller has a loose, though not super-fast arm, one that has been delivering a consistently better repertoire this spring. His fastball has excellent movement down in the zone and he’s been up to 96 mph with the pitch. His slider has also gotten better with more consistent action as an 81-84 mph short, hard breaking ball. He has feel for a low-80s changeup as well. Some scouts feel Miller could have a plus heater and two above-average secondary offerings in the future, with the chance to become a durable innings-eater in a big league rotation. He’s around the strike zone and is super-competitive on the mound. The fact that his father, Mike, played in the NFL doesn’t hurt in terms of dreaming of what he can do athletically, with the only question being if he can be signed away from his UCLA commitment. Lots of 90-93 mph without a ton of movement; size and ease of delivery portend more velocity, but fastball might always play down a little. Inconsistent slider finish, but his best ones are 55s in the 82-84 mph range with traditional slider shape. Changeup has better long-term projection even though it's not used as often right now. Really sells the changeup with his arm speed, and creates tumble and tail on the pitch. It's also not consistent due to lack of use, but has big ceiling down the road as Miller's touch and feel develops. He finished last season with seven shutout innings against Notre Dame at the College World Series, then sparked more interest by popping 99 mph with his fastball during fall practice after peaking at 96 as a sophomore. But he has been hammered this spring, leaving clubs uncertain about where he should fit into the Draft. Dettmer's fastball has maxed out at 96 again this year and lost some of its trademark sink and run, and his heater has gotten hit hard when he hasn't commanded it. His best offering is a solid slider that features tight break in the low 80s. He tries to keep left-handers off the fastball with a mid-80s changeup that has featured quality tumble in the past but has had less life in 2023. Working from a high three-quarters slot, Dettmer has seen his control regress this spring and even when he threw more strikes, command wasn't his strong suit. He has a strong 6-foot-4 frame built for a starter's workload. But after entering the year with first-round upside and a chance for perhaps three plus pitches if he could locate them better, he has become an enigma. He spent his first two seasons at junior colleges, batting .397/.472/.683 with 49 steals (second in the NJCAA) at Butler (Kan.) in 2021 and .431/.502/.631 with 43 swipes (sixth in the NJCAA) at Eastern Oklahoma State last year. He earned Summit League Player of the Year accolades and helped Oral Roberts reach the College World Series this spring by batting .412/.470/.646 with 28 steals. He topped NCAA Division I with 114 hits and fashioned a 47-game hitting streak, tied for the third-longest in D-I history. Cox has well-above-average speed and an offensive approach that focuses on getting on base to take advantage of his quickness. A right-handed hitter, he makes consistent contact to all fields, is adept at bunting and can turn infield grounders into singles. While he doesn't look to launch balls, he has good bat speed and enough strength to produce 12-15 homers annually. Cox's speed translates better on the bases than it does on defense at this point. A shortstop in junior college, he's still learning the nuances of center field after shifting there with the Golden Eagles. He's quick enough to become an asset in center, albeit with a below-average arm.
