His hometown D-backs took him in Round 19, but he was intent on heading to Oregon State for college. He had a big freshman season, pounding out 14 homers and finishing with an OPS north of 1.100. The power was back, and then some, with 19 home runs in 2024, though he only hit .277 as a sophomore. A solid turn in the Cape Cod League last summer has carried over to a productive junior season. In some ways, Turley is the same player he was post-high school, a veritable toolshed with some concerns about him using those tools consistently. He might have as much raw power as anyone in this Draft class, with some scouts hanging a 70 on it. He can drive the ball for extra bases anywhere with prodigious home run pop thanks to outstanding bat speed, and he was showing more ability to hit the ball out the other way this spring. There has long been the question about whether he’ll hit enough to get to that power. He had a 36 percent miss rate in 2024 with the Beavers, leading to a 27.3 percent strikeout rate, and while he’s improved those rates this season, including his propensity to chase breaking stuff, the swing-and-miss is still a concern. He does draw a ton of walks to help offset that. Turley has above-average speed, though he hasn’t used that to be a basestealing threat, and his athleticism does help him in the outfield, where his easily plus arm is also an asset. He didn’t have a great fall, but his tools have shown up more this spring, which has helped stabilize his Draft stock. The Colonial Athletic Association pitcher of the year, he led NCAA Division I in K/BB ratio (9.6) and WHIP (0.76) and also ranked second in walk rate (1.0 per nine innings) and third in ERA (1.98). One of the top college senior arms available, he should be UNCW's highest-drafted pitcher since supplemental first-rounder Brad Holt in 2008. Taylor's fastball jumped 3 mph this spring, as he worked at 92-95 mph and touched 98 while maintaining his velocity deep into games and throughout the season. His fastball lacks life but he commands it well and it's difficult to hit when he locates it up in the zone. He does a fine job of killing spin on his low-80s changeup, which fades and sinks and grades as a solid pitch. While neither Taylor's mid-80s slider nor his low-80s curveball stand out with their spin or shape, they generate a high level of chases and empty swings. He overcomes his lack of size with a drop-and-drive delivery that produces a low release height, flat approach angle and plenty of extension, which combine to make his pitches more difficult for hitters to pick up. He's 23 and pretty much a finished product, but he has a long history of throwing strikes and a high floor as at least a back-of-the-rotation starter.
