A small forward in this league must be able to put the ball on the floor and beat people to the rim, defend the most versatile player on the court, find and hit the open player with a solid pass, etc. Generally, a '3' in this day and age is a secondary point guard, armed with an array of skills and the ability to defend several positions. Rasheed doesn't own the necessary tools to play the '3'. And don't get me started on 'Sheed playing center. You think his 7.4 rebounds per game last season was below average? Imagine him doing his best Raef LaFrentz impersonation with the Blazers, moving beyond the 3-point line to pull the opposing center away from the rim. He might drain a few deep jumpers and some threes, but his length, quick jumping and silky-smooth touch would be completely wasted 23 feet away from the rim. And his rebounding numbers would fall even lower. Some fans wonder why 'Sheed should be forced to play down low, especially if he isn't comfortable down there. I'll tell you why: that's where he's most valuable to the team. The team pays him very handsomely to contribute to the best of his ability. His best asset his ability to post up down low, turn and shoot 10-15 foot jumpers over the outstretched arms of his defender. Supporters of Wallace say he's the consummate team player, a guy who could average 25 points but prefers to look for an open teammate. But a real team guy would realize his strengths and utilize them, wouldn't he? Get down on the low block, put your butt into your defender, carve out some space and go to work! Check out Wallace's career stats. Before Mike Dunleavy's departure, Wallace never shot below 50% from the floor with the Blazers. After Cheeks took over, Wallace's FG% has dipped to .470. And the number of threes he's jacking up have almost doubled (from 2.1 attempts per game to 4.0) under Cheeks. If Zach is to get the minutes he needs to develop his game, Rasheed must be moved. And not to another position. Message board madness Are the Blazers talking with the Hawks and Mavericks about a three-way trade that would see Wallace, Ruben Patterson, Bonzi Wells, Jeff McInnis and Arvydas Sabonis traded for Sharif Abdur Rahim, Nick Van Exel, Theo Ratliff and Tariq Abdul-Wahad? The message boards in Dallas and Portland are running wild with this rumor. I can't find any sources to back up the chatter, so take the info with a grain of salt. --
