Could the pilot somehow maneuver it to 'land' port or starboard in the hopes the plane would remain afloat a bit longer to afford an escape? Mary A: The pilot would try to land the plane as flat as possible, along the direction of the swell. You still have plenty of control of a plane when the engines fail - even 747s are very good gliders.
