ELASTICA STUTTER TO A HALT JUSTINE FRISCHMANN has exclusively revealed to NME.COM the news which everyone was expecting - ELASTICA have split up. Just days after Catatonia called it a day following disappointing album sales, the Elastica singer/guitarist revealed that her once popular band have also split. Their demise had long been rumoured. Elastica have been quiet for the past 12 months and music industry gossip suggested they had split. But there was never any official confirmation, and the band were well known for long periods of inactivity. Their second album 'The Menace' came out last year, five years after their eponymous debut. In January, Frischmann told NME that the band were planning to decamp to New York to write new material. But it is now clear the post-'Menace' sessions were not a success. Justine Frischmann told NME.COM: "Yes, we have split up. It's actually not official yet. We've got a Peel Sessions album coming out and we've got a farewell single coming out. I'm actually hugely relieved, to be honest. I'm feeling much happier. I don't want to say I've got other projects, because it's such a cliche, but I have. It will be music, I'm not suddenly going to have an acting career." Elastica's debut album went to Number One in March 1995. At the time, Frischmann was living with Damon Albarn and the couple were regularly featured in the tabloid press. But when 'The Menace' was released last year it failed to even reach the Top Ten, while single releases also failed to make the Top 40. 'The Radio 1 Sessions' is released through Strange Fruit on October 29. The release of a final Elastica single is yet to be confirmed and the band do not even have a record deal as their label, Deceptive, ceased trading earlier this year. Frischmann has already collaborated with British Meat Scene on 'Too Old To Die Young' for the soundtrack of the new British film, 'Mike Bassett: England Manager'.
