Conor Jackson, OF: The 19th overall pick in the 2003 draft, Jackson is one of the most polished and refined position prospects around. He has amazing plate discipline and hit over .300 in High-A and Double-A last season. He also added 17 homers and seven steals. This 22-year-old is a poor man's Bobby Abreu that will have a small chance at winning a major league spot in Spring Training. As you will see below, he has company. ETA: 2005 2. Carlos Quentin, OF: Meet Jackson's clone. The similarities between Jackson and Quentin are stunning, from the colleges they attended (Cal and Stanford) to their draft statuses (first round, 2003). They clobbered High-A pitching and went up to Double-A together, and both breezed through that level as well. Like Jackson, Quentin hit above .300 at both levels with 21 homers and five steals on the season. Quentin's plate discipline is just a step below Jackson, so that's why he is a spot below Jackson for now. ETA: 2005 3. Josh Kroeger, OF: A former fourth round draft choice, Kroeger broke out with a vengeance last season. Between Double-A and Triple-A, the 22-year-old hit well above .300 at both levels with 51 doubles and 19 home runs. His biggest weakness, and it is huge, is his lack of plate discipline. In 54 at-bats for the Diamondbacks late in the season, Kroeger had a 1/21 BB/K ratio. Correcting that problem could determine whether he truly will start in the majors for the long-term. ETA: 2005 4. Sergio Santos, SS: Santos must continue to make progress in the high minors. Scouts love the former first round pick's tools, but he hit just .282-11-52 last season in Double-A last season at the age of 21. Lower numbers may have been due to a shoulder problem, however. Plate discipline became a greater problem for him at Double-A as well. This is still a possible 20 home run hitter in the majors. ETA: 2006 5. Chris Carter, OF: Maybe it was just the very low minors, but the numbers do not lie. This guy can rake. Carter was drafted in the 17th round in 2004 and hit .336-15-63 with a 46/34 BB/K ratio in 256 at-bats last season. He is a little bit similar to Jack Cust due to his lack of defense, so let's hope Carter continues to develop enough with the bat to offset those problems. ETA: 2007 6. Dustin Nippert, SP: The 23-year-old Nippert is a large framed right-hander that throws in the mid-90s. He has been excellent up to Double-A thus far, but walks are still a problem for him. Then in June he had a further setback with Tommy John surgery. Look for him to return to Double-A by the end of next season. ETA: 2006 7. Ramon Antonio Pena, SP: The pitcher formerly known as Adriano Rosario has a potentially bright major league future due to his velocity. When he was known as Rosario, it was thought that he was 19-years-old and thus one of the top prospects in the game. Now he is 22, so his star has dimmed slightly. When he did pitch early last season, he struggled in Double-A. This is all puzzling since "this guy" throws in the high-90s. His strikeout rates, even in the low minors, have not been great. At this point, his status as a prospect is about as unclear as his name. ETA: 2006 8. Jay Garthwaite, OF: The D-Backs are hoping Garthwaite will pickup the pieces after a bad performance in Double-A last season. He did look good in High-A prior to the call-up. Like Josh Kroeger, Garthwaite has good average and power ability but struggles with his plate discipline. 2005 should be a make or break year for his prospect status. ETA: 2006 9. Jamie D'Antona, 3B: D'Antona was a second round pick in the 2003 draft, and with Conor Jackson and Carlos Quentin, makes that one of the most impressive drafts for any team. D'Antona did not take off in Double-A like Jackson and Quentin, but he did hit .315-13-57 in less than 300 at-bats in High-A. The worry is that he will develop into an all or nothing power hitter, which also helps to explain his struggles against more advanced pitchers in Double-A. ETA: 2006 10. Matt Chico, SP: You don't usually see lefties that throw in the mid-90s all the way back at #10 on an organization's prospect list. That's a compliment to this season more than it is criticism of Chico. This 21-year-old lefty and third round pick in the 2003 draft is undersized, but he has carried excellent strikeout rates up do Double-A. He did fair in Double-A with an ERA near 6.00 last season as his control got away from him. The control was also a huge problem during his year at USC, but this southpaw's stuff is too good to downplay. At 5-11, who knows, the D-Backs might decide to turn him into Billy Wagner.
