PHOENIX -- Third baseman Troy Glaus was given a cortisone shot in his left leg and was unavailable to play for Arizona on Sunday afternoon. It is the second time this year that Glaus has gotten a shot for a strained left tendon behind his left knee. The first shot seemed to give Glaus some relief, but recently he's struggled while running. Glaus will be unavailable for 48 hours, but Arizona manager Bob Melvin expects him to be back in the lineup on Tuesday. The decision to have the shot now was made because, with Monday's off-day, Glaus would miss just one contest. "He's not running very well, and sometimes when you do that, ow, all of a sudden, you're going to overcompensate, and the other side may take the brunt of it," Melvin said. "And we don't need him to get nicked up in other spots as well." Glaus, who has been playing through several nagging injuries this year, told Melvin he could play through it, but the manager felt enough aas enough. "We needed to do this," Melvin said. "We need to get him healthy. He's been struggling the last couple of days with it." Glaus will likely get another shot over the All-Star break. "We think that two within that period of time will go a long way toward healing him up," said Melvin. Big guns out: Glaus'aabsence meant the Diamondbacks were without their third and fourth hitters in the lineup. Left fielder Luis Gonzalez left the team on Saturday after the death of his stepfather. Gonzalez is on the bereavement list, which means he will miss a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven. First baseman Chad Tracy gtt the starting nod in left field on Sunday against the Tigers' Jeremy Bonderman. "With the three-four guys out [of] there, we're trying to get a little more offense in there, a little more power in there," Melvin said. "It's not like it's foreign territory to him." Tracy played part of one game in left field last year -- an extra-inning contest in Milwaukee, where he caught two fly balls -- and he played 30 games during winter ball prior to the 2003 season. In addition, he played there extensively during 2003 Spring Training. "I'm not going to win a Gold Glove or anything," Tracy said with a smile. "I can catch it if it's hit pretty close to me." Melvin told Tracy after Saturday night's game that he would start in left on Sunday, and Tracy took some fly balls out there early Sunday. "It's certainly a little bit of a risk," Melvin said. "But we feel with Bonderman out there on the mound, we're trying to get some offense." Long day: Matt Kata was called up on Saturday from Triple-A Tucson to take Gonzalez's spot on the roster, and it was a long day for him. Kata had a 4 a.m. wakeup call in Tacoma, Wash., so that he could fly back to Phoenix with his Tucson teammates. He then drove from Phoenix to Tucson, packed up his belongings and turned around to drive back to Phoenix. Kata once again played the outfield during his second stint with Tucson this year, and, with his ability to play three positions in the infield, he gives Melvin lots of options. "He gives us flexibility in multiple spots," Melvin said. Almost there: Outfielder Luis Terrero w-----for-5 with Tucson on Saturday as he continues his rehab assignment. Melvin had said he wanted to see Terrero in a groove at the plate before being activated. "He's probably pretty soon here on the horizon," Melvin said of Terrero. When the club activates Terrero, it appears a position player will be taken off the roster, as Melvin said he wants to stick with 12 pitchers, rather than go back to 11. Up next: After putting the finishing touches on Interleague Play on Sunday, the Diamondbacks return to intradivisional play on Tuesday when they open a three- game series with the Giants at Bank One Ballpark. Brad Halsey will get the starting nod for the Diamondbacks in a rematch with right-hander Jason Schmidt. --
