http://tinyurl.com/h5vb5 07/17/2006 10:15 PM ET Notes: Clark likely on his way to DL First baseman injured shoulder last month during BP PHOENIX -- Nobody really wanted to come out and say it, but it sure looks like there's a good chance first baseman Tony Clark is headed to the disabled list. Clark hurt his right shoulder last month while swinging a bat doing extra work in the batting cage during a game. The veteran had a magnetic resonance imaging test done on the shoulder shortly thereafter that manager Bob Melvin said showed a "little something in there." What that "little something" is isn't exactly clear, but typically MRIs of the shoulder are used to diagnose problems with the labrum or rotator cuff. Clark was equally vague about the specific nature of the injury. "There comes a point in time where you have to look in the mirror and realize that you're not doing the ballclub any [good] by continuing to work through it," he said. "Trying to protect it is what I've been trying to do so far and if it's a situation where someone else is better suited to being on the field than that's the way it has to go." After smacking 30 homers last year, Clark has struggled at the plate this year. He entered Monday's game with a .185 mark in 108 at-bats. When asked if the DL was a possibility Melvin said, "We've been monitoring it day by day trying to do the best we can. It bothered him yesterday so we'll probably have further discussions after the game today." When asked a similar question Clark said, "Obviously you'd like to avoid it. When you go on the DL they don't allow you to play. I'm not a big fan of the DL so I try to avoid it." If Clark did have something wrong with his labrum or rotator cuff, it would not necessarily require surgery. Shortstop Craig Counsell was diagnosed with a small tear in his labrum during Spring Training and after a few weeks of rest and a strengthening program he has come back and not experienced any further problems with it. "Oh, I certainly hope not," Clark said when asked if surgery was a possibility. "I hope at this point in time it doesn't require anything more than a little rest. Is that rest going to take 15 days? I don't know, maybe. But at this point in time I'm available today and for now we'll take it from there." Just like riding a bike: With Clark hurting and Conor Jackson having to miss Monday's game after straining his left shoulder Sunday, Melvin decided to start Shawn Green at first base. An outfielder by trade, first base isn't exactly a new position for Green, who appeared in 111 games there for the Dodgers in 2004 and one in 2001. He also takes grounders there frequently during batting practice. "Just throws to second base, working on some of the bunt plays and so forth," Melvin said about what Green needed to do before Monday's game. "It's not like we're running a guy out there that has never played first base before." Speaking of Jackson: Jackson said the preliminary reading of his MRI on Monday showed no structural damage. Jackson injured the shoulder Sunday when he tagged out the Brewers' Prince Fielder. "It's a little sore so we'll give it today to rest," Jackson said. "I expect that I'll be available to play [Tuesday]." Rumors, rumors: In its Monday editions, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the D-Backs have shown an interest in pitcher Jake Westbrook, who is in the final year of a two-year deal. Drew squared: Monday marked the first time in their professional careers that brothers Stephen and J.D. Drew had played against each other. Stephen, the D-Backs shortstop, was called up from Triple-A Tucson on Friday, while J.D, a Dodgers outfielder who is seven years Stephen's senior, made his big-league debut in 1998. "For me, it's going to be exciting," Stephen said. "He's taught me a lot. I used to be a switch-hitter. I think when I was 11 or 12 or something like that he taught me how to hit left-handed. It paid off in the long run. He's taught me a lot about the game." The brothers' parents, David and Libby, were at Chase Field on Monday. Champing at the bit: Outfielder Scott Hairston said he expects to be back in the lineup for Triple-A Tucson on Friday or Saturday "at the latest." Hairston was recalled from Tucson on June 19 and injured his right shoulder that day when he ran into the left-field wall. "I've been letting it go the last few days," Hairston said of swinging fully. "Throwing I've probably gone at about 85 percent. I'm going to start letting it go today to see how it feels. I'm just dying to get back on that field and start playing some games." The 26-year-old has put up big numbers against Triple-A pitching this year, hitting .340 with 18 homers and 55 RBIs.
