After stealing second base in the opening inning, Jeff DaVanon sprained his left ankle, forcing him to leave the game. X-rays revealed that there was no break but rather a mild sprain. Melvin implied after the game that DaVanon would be placed on the 15 day disabled list, even though the injury probably did not require that much time to heal, so that the club can bring up another bat. Melvin said DaVanon would be re-evaluated before Sunday's game. "We're a little limited, obviously, as it is right now on the bench," Melvin said. "Therefore, [I] had to hit [right-handed pitcher] Enrique [Gonzalez] earlier in the game. I only had two other guys and then the catcher [Chris Snyder] after that. Obviously, it puts us in a little bit of a tough spot. "It's either the 15-day DL, or you go with three guys on your bench, one of them being a catcher, you basically have two guys. [That's a] difficult way to play it." The bat may come in the form of Triple-A Tucson third baseman Brian Barden, who is hitting .311 with 16 home runs and 85 RBIs. Scott Hairston is another potential candidate, as he is on the 40-man roster and was called up for a game earlier this season. Undecided: With their ace Brandon Webb sidelined for the next couple of days with elbow inflammation, the D-Backs have decided to take it one day at a time. Melvin would not reveal who will pitch on Monday in Saturday's pre-game press conference. Edgar Gonzalez (1-2, 6.27) seems to be the likely candidate as he is on the 40-man roster and has made a pair of starts and four relief appearances for the D-Backs earlier this season. Arizona may decide to purchase the contract of Mike Bacsik, whose numbers are hard to overlook with an 11-0 mark and 2.40 ERA at Tucson. Melvin said after the game that the team may consider pitching Gonzalez on three days rest. The rookie right-hander last pitched in Thursday's double-header in Chicago and was charged with six runs over five innings. He added that Webb will likely miss close to a full turn in the rotation. Webb was scheduled to throw on Saturday against Houston's Roger Clemens. His next turn in the rotation would come on Aug. 12 when the D-Backs host the Marlins, should Webb be available. "His next bullpen will dictate what the course of action is," Melvin said. "I don't want to bring that up [placing him on the disabled list]. Obviously, all the options are open. We feel good enough hopefully that once he throws his bullpen that the next thing is just picking a day." Webb said on Friday that he has developed some inflammation and soreness in the flexor tendon in his right elbow over his last two starts. Making some moves: Dustin Nippert was called up from Tucson before Saturday's game to fill in Webb's vacancy. To make room for the 25-year-old right-hander, the club designated Mike Koplove for assignment. Koplove was called up from Tucson between games of Thursday's double-header in Chicago. In his brief stint with the D-Backs this season, he made two relief appearances as he gave up a run in one inning on Thursday and pitched two scoreless innings in Friday's loss to Houston. "He certainly has pitched very well down there [for Tucson]," Melvin said of Koplove who has been with the organization since 2001. "[He's] a guy that we've had here before. It looked to me his last couple outings that his stuff back. We saw last year when he went down, that the velocity wasn't there, I don't think the confidence was there. I think you saw a different guy here." Before his contract was purchased, Koplove went 3-0 with a 3.35 ERA in 39 relief appearances for the Sidewinders. "He was a numbers casualty [Saturday] and he knew going in, to an extent, that this probably had a chance to be a short stint for him," Melvin added. The D-Backs have 10 days to trade Koplove or waive him. If he clears waivers, he could also accept an assignment with Tucson. Getting hot: After struggling for the first two months of the season, Orlando Hudson is starting to come into his own. Entering Saturday's game, Hudson was hitting .279 with 11 home runs a team-high six triples. Hudson hit .304 in the month of June and .323 in July after batting in the .230s before the All Star break. Up next:The D-Backs take on the Astros in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. MST.
