Recently I picked up a class called Taiko (Japanese drumming). It meets on Monday evenings. We learn Taiko drumming techniques, the history of Taiko in the US, and perform drills and exercises, both solo and group. Some of my classmates probably see this class as an opportunity to learn about different cultures, but I see it as a gym substitute - I get bored easily doing treadmills / exercise bikes. Through this class I've discovered that 1) I like beating on stuff really hard, and 2) I don't play well with others (lol). I pick up the techniques and stances easily enough, but in group play I feel like I'm only going through the motions rather than really being a part of the group. I've never been a team player. My favorite activities are chess, reading, skiing, hiking, ballroom dancing and (used to be) swimming. None of these are team-oriented. OTOH the "exercise" aspect is really paying off in terms of aching arms and wrists :) Another class I regularly attend is ballroom dancing. Although I probably look like a potato with legs, I can say I do rather well for a beginner, if a little mechanical.
