It turns out to be right afterwards in this case, but we could imagine that there could be many scientists holding totally different views which probably all of us never hear this kind of idea because the voice is too weak to express in public. The main question is should they keep trying to put more effort on this uncertain hypothesis in the rest of their lives? If this assumption later is proved that it is wrong, then this scientist seems doing nothing during his lifetime (however, from the different perspective, this scientist suggested a contrasting way to understand its topic).
