"The truth is," Hollins told Sporting News on Wednesday, "we've known Rudy was going to be out. I told the players long before it came out publicly that he wasn't coming back. I knew he wasn't coming back when it happened. So it might be news for everybody else, but for us, we have been used to this news for a long time now." Gay injured his shoulder on Feb. 15 against the Sixers, when he got tangled up with rookie Evan Turner on a post-up play and fell to the ground immediately, in pain. He had separated the shoulder, but while he said publicly that he could come back in April, the shoulder wasn't healing with rest and it became clear he would require surgery. That meant 19.8 points and 6.2 rebounds disappeared from the Memphis lineup. A year ago, that type of news would have devastated the Grizzlies— they were young and the roster was thin, and after an impressive 24-11 surge in midseason, last year's Grizzlies simply ran out of steam in the stretch run and finished on a 2-9 skid. This year, though, Gay's injury shows the progress that the team has made under Hollins and the job the front office has done to fill out the roster. With Wednesday's 90-87 win here over the Celtics, the Grizzlies are now 9-6 since Gay's injury and have kept their hold on the West's last playoff spot. "You're absolutely right," Zach Randolph said when the notion was floated that last year's Grizzlies would not be able to handle the loss of Gay. "We ran out of gas last year. We didn't have the depth and we were too young. But I think the way we played so far without Rudy, it has shown a lot, it has shown what we are made of. We're a young team but we're good, too, and you can't just keep using the fact that you're young as an excuse. You have to start winning over 82 games." A good example of that newfound depth is forward Tony Allen, who was signed away from the Celtics in a surprise move last summer. Allen has been a valuable swingman for Memphis, and averaged 13.4 points (on 53.5 percent shooting) in the first 14 games without Gay. And an example of that newfound maturity can be seen in fourth-year point guard Mike Conley, who has been as consistent as he has been in his career over the course of this year, especially without Gay. "We have held up pretty well," Conley said. "We have tried to look at it as, Rudy is not here, but other guys can now have a chance to show what they can do. We want to have Rudy here for this, but that kind of opportunity can be big for a lot of players, and a lot of guys have stepped up." In fact, Hollins said he has used the play of the rest of the team to teach Gay a lesson in the fleeting nature of stardom and the replace-ability of all players, even stars. "I told Rudy, 'This is a good lesson for you to put everything in perspective," Hollins said. "'No matter how good you are, the show goes on and there will be someone coming into your place and do your job. They might not be as good as you, but they're going to do the job, coaches are going to have confidence in them, fans are going to cheer for you the same way that they do for you.' Keep it all in perspective. There's a lesson there."
