Our hitting has been hot since entering the season. The
reserves have proved well that, given chances to play, they
are able to produce. I guess the biggest surprise so far
has to be Lew Ford, and he should still see much playing time
as OF/DH even after those injured come back. As for Blanco
and Offerman, their hot streaks will eventually come to an
end, but they'll be just fine with backup roles. Punto and
Cuddyer are very useful utility guys, I like them.
The problem with the lineup is the inability to score
runs. Stewart is certainly a great leadoff, but can those
behind him drive him back across the plate? Mientkiewicz's
power is below average for a corner infielder, and Koskie
has been losing his in recent years. Hunter and Jones, or
at least Hunter, have power, but they strike out too often.
Mauer hasn't developed his power yet, and I don't foresee
that flourishing this season. Not to mention Guzman and Rivas.
Morneau is our top hitting prospect, but if he's called up,
can he produce immediately? Losing Pierzynski during off-
season definitely damages our offense to some extent.
What worries me more is our staff. Radke has ups and
downs, but he's relatively consistent. Santana has the stuff,
and he'll carry us over to a successful season if only he
achieves his promising potential. Lohse is young and on
progress. Silva is having the first taste of starting pitch-
ing this season. We do need Helling to return soon 'cause
Greisinger is not the long-term solution.
The biggest problem with the rotation so far is the
lacking of endurance. The five of them, on average, have
pictched only 5.43 innings per start. That leaves a huge
workload to the bullpen, which, as you know, is not as solid
as it was last year, due to the departure of Guardado and
Hawkins. Nathan, Romero and Rincon are reliable, but I don't
have much confidence in the others. Maybe we'll see Jesse
Crain having joined the bullpen some time during the season.
