SPIRIT Martial Arts Combat January 29, 2005 National Taiwan University The Judo Exhibition hall was jam-packed with over 300 rabid and excited spectators and as the clock struck 7:10 PM this past Saturday night, they were all treated to a night of unbelieveable strength, courage and intensity. Following is the results and a brief play-by-play to each match. Bout #1 Scott Sommers (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. Jun Ying Tong (Wrestling) This bout started off fast as both men engaged in a flurry of punches to break the ice. Both being fighters with grappling backgrounds, they soon engaged in the clinch and from there Sommers was able to execute a nice Greco-Roman takedown. Using his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills to gain favorable positioning on the ground, Scott took control once it hit the mats and threw strong punches and strikes from the top position. Tong, trying to fight his way out of the bottom, was hit cleanly several times in the face and when he failed to respond to the referee's call for action, the bout was stopped due to the strikes. Winner was SCOTT SOMMERS by TKO in Round 1. Bout #2 Justin Lee (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. 王 建 鈞 (Tae Kwon Do) This match was pure banging on the feet from the beginning to the end as both fighters had Tae Kwon Do experience and were not afraid to let the high kicks fly! Wang was able to catch Lee with a great roundhouse kick to the head and immediately followed with strong punches from the mount on the downed Lee. When Lee could not respond to the referee's call to defend himself intelligently, the fight was stopped. Winner was JEN JUN WANG by KO in Round 1. Bout #3 游 士 宇 vs. Zhong Guan Wu (Wrestling) This fight was a combination of striking, wrestling and goundfighting. The crowd was treated to a great showcase of heart and determination by both fighters! There was an array of takedowns and exchanged positions on the ground. The best part was the second and final round, where both men did spinning and jumping punches and kicks on each other that had the crowd going crazy! After 2 hard fought rounds, the fight went to the judges and it was rightfully declared a DRAW. Bout #4 Kaider Sheen (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. 陳 柏 州 (TFKC) This fight had electricity right from the start as Chen took his shirt off as he was being introduced and immediately began flexing and twisting his muscles in a attempt to intimidate his opponent. The crowd was going nuts for this impromptu bodybuilding show and Chen definitely looked to be in great physical condition. The fight got off to a fast start as both men engaged in rapid punching and kicking exchanges. Chen took the opportunity to go in for a takedown and scored a great throw on Sheen. On the ground, Chen was delivering hard shots to the body and head as he was going into effective ground and pound mode. Alas, Chen made a mistake by over-extending on one of his punches and Sheen quickly set him up for a triangle choke from the guard. From there, Chen did not quit and proceeded to pound on Sheen. Finally, however, Chen had no choice but to tap out as he was nearly choked into unconciousness as the crowd literally EXPLODED out of their seats in approval. KAIDER SHEEN by SUBMISSION Round 1. Bout #5 Hagan Cooper (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. 林 威 廷 (Boxing) This was an intriguing match-up as Cooper is known as liking to mix his Muay-Thai kickboxing skills with his Jiu-Jitsu and he was matched up against a Boxer who had no fear in his eyes. This match-up was explosive from the start as Lin ran straight at Cooper throwing punching combinations. Cooper wasted no time in trading the blows and getting Lin into a Thai-neck clinch. From there Cooper threw some nice knees to the face of Lin and Lin was forced to tap out when he was caught with a knee to the nose that caused bleeding. HAGAN COOPER by TKO in Round 1. Bout #6 Yi Hon (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. 馮 裕 灃 (Ninjitsu) Both fighters literally ran at each other from the word "Go" and didn't stop. Pong was able to get the early takedowns and work some effective ground and pound in Round 1. Yi-Hon was able to reverse many of the positions on the ground, however, and landed some nice strikes of his own on the feet and ground. Round 2 started much the same way Round 1 did and both fighters grappled for positioning. This time, Yi-Hon was able to get the takedowns and gain superior positioning on the ground such as gettting to Pong's back and striking from there. The fight ended after 2 rounds and the judges gave the nod to YI HON in a victory by UNANIMOUS DECISION. Bout #7 Brian Curry (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. Ben Price (The Forge) This was the only heavyweight match-up of the night and the crowd was amped to see the big boys get to work. Right away Curry came out wanting to set the tone on the feet and was able to land several good jabs and crosses. Price, being at a reach disadvantage, tried to wait for his opening to take the fight to the ground. Curry was landing some solid shots on the feet when Price's patience finally paid off and he was able to get a takedown on Curry. Price was able to land effective strikes from the half-guard and mount positions and was keeping Curry pinned down. Round 1 ended with Price in the process of doing an effective ground and pound. Round 2 started and Curry came out throwing Jab/Hook/Cross combinations that were brutal and mixed in some devastating knees. Price, who did not back up a single inch, could not get the fight to the ground this time and after Round 2 the judges gave BRIAN CURRY a victory by UNANIMOUS DECISION after 2 great rounds of action. Bout #8 Steve McMillan (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. 阿 諾 (TFKC) This was a highly anticipated match as Arnold was RIPPED to the bone muscle-wise and Steve was trim and ready as well. Both guys wanted to bang on the feet but Steve found himself being taken down where Arnold tried to launch a ground and pound attack. Steve was able to reverse the position quickly when Arnold gave up his back, and then mount. As the crowd once again EXPLODED in anticipation of what was going to happen next, McMillan wasted no time in taking advantage of this mistake and slapped on a textbook armbar from the mount position, thus forcing Arnold to tap out, making STEVE McMILLAN the winner by SUBMISSION in the first round. Bout #9 Vaughn Anderson (Wang Jiu-Jitsu Team) vs. Nick Stach (Gordon) This was the main-event of the night and deservedly so as both men trained extremely hard for this event and the performance they put on was both courageous and exciting. Stach took the early lead when he was able to take Anderson down on two separate occasions and work an effective ground and pound from top position. Round 2 was off to a rocking start as once again Anderson tried to land some heavy leather on the feet but was taken down. This time, Anderson was not content on fighting from his back and quickly tried to stand-up. Stach, who had been working hard for the takedowns and on the ground, stood up a bit tired. Anderson then went on the offensive and landed clean shots on the feet and then took Stach down and quickly got mount where he threw several hard punches. Neither men backed down and both fought to the wire with all their heart and desire. The match ended with Anderson attacking from the mount and the judges saw it as a DRAW, and deservedly so.
