His 2005 publication Le Conte de fé es du classicisme aux Lumières was granted Le Prix Eve Delacroix de l’Acadé mie Français. His earlier books include Rhétorique et roman au 18e siècle (1985), Marivaux, Cervantes et le roman post-critique (1999), Métafictions (1670-1730). La Réflexivité dans la littérature d'imagination (2002). Abstract: This speech discusses the representation of female characters in Antoine Galland ’s French translation of the Arabian Nights (12 volumes published between 1704 and 1717). Galland’s version, translated, adapted and expanded in the 18th century, was criticized in later centuries for having weakened the powerful characteristics of Arabian women in the original text. Expurgating the “ inappropriate” parts and applying contemporary morality and culture to the remodeling of female characters in the Arabian Nights, Galland, however, has actually created an image of the Oriental that suited the 18th-century French taste and contributed to the liberating power of these tales. Detailed examples will be given from the framing narrative, “The Three Ladies from Bagdag,” and “The Story of Two Sisters Who Were Jealous of Their Younger Sister.” 外文系系辦 --
