Cooper replaces Jeff Bzdelik, who posted a 73-119 (.380) record from 2002-04 in his first NBA head coaching stint. "It's never easy to make a decision like this but we felt a change was needed for our team,”said Vandeweghe. "With more than 20 years of experience as a coach and player, Michael has the right tools to direct our team during this time. "Jeff is a tireless worker and we appreciate everything he has done for this franchise. We wish him well in his future endeavors." Cooper joined the Nuggets as an assistant coach on July 6, 2004 following a successful head coaching stint with the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. In four-plus seasons as head coach of the Sparks, Cooper led his team to WNBA Championships in 2001 and 2002, a 116-31 (.789) regular-season record and three consecutive appearances in the Finals. He was named the 2000 WNBA Coach of the Year in his first year as head coach. Cooper served as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1994-97 following three years as the Special Assistant to former General Manager Jerry West. A 12-year NBA veteran, Cooper spent his entire playing career with the Lakers. During his playing career, he was a member of five NBA Championship teams (1980, '82, '85, '87 and '88) and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1987. Current Nuggets assistant coaches Scott Brooks and Adrian Dantley will remain on the bench with Cooper. The search for the head coach begins immediately. Cooper will be considered for the head coaching job along with other select candidates. --
