I agree with you. If you roll the time back to 1960s', in which school teachers and government jobs were recognised as the best careers; even bachelor degrees were thought very good in that time. If there were PTT existing, people might be discussing 'to get a master degree would make your future narrower'. However, is that true? Certainly, not. The real story is the economy of this country have been upgrading from traditional-agriculture-base, family manufacture, until now, to advanced manufacture. (Excuse me, I cannot agree the current Taiwanese electronic manufacture style can be catalogued as a 'hi-tech' one. I know they do do R&D, yet not that proper R&D. On the other hand, suppose they did do good R&D, basically, you would not come here to worry about a PhD's future, will you?) If Taiwanese keep doing manufacture like now without upgrading more to a higher level --- the labour structure will not change too much, then an increasing number of PhDs will definitely over supply the labour market. It would be even worse, if the current industries keep spend money on upgrading China merely to get cheap labour cost, rather than on upgrading themselves to make a higher level of R&D ability (which requires more PhDs). However, if the story goes to another streamline, if Taiwanese industries do spend their money on upgrading their R&D and set their goals to become one of the main leading technical suppliers in the future, then they will inevitably have to employ more and more doctorate labours. Why? If you want an absolutely quality of research, three masters together is not better than a PhD working properly, neither does 9 bachelors nor 27 technicians or whatever. Yes, if you go to career earlier rather than go for a PhD, you can certainly occupy a position with a master degree, or equivalent ability, having more choices. However, a position of what? You cannot expect to lead a research group, which consists of mostly PhDs, just because you are pretty experienced or merely aged. This is why you always see some old men studying for their PhDs. I know, for industries, to get a PhD employee is more expensive. However, a PhD is usually not paid three times more than, roughly, a master's payment. And an absolute good product is usually much more expensive and thus can make much more profit. Hope the industries can realise this soon. So, rather to argue which side (a PhD is good or not for your future) is correct or not. I dare to suggest: Com'on gentlemen, let's consider things like a PhD! --
