Official Announcement
Below is an official release from the United States Tennis Association,
which will honor Sampras with a special presentation on Monday evening
on Day 1 of the US Open.
On Monday, August 25, Pete Sampras will officially announce his retirement
at a press conference prior to his appearance at a special ceremony at the
U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.
The U.S. Open, the site of some of Sampras' greatest triumphs, including
five U.S. Open singles titles -- his first, in 1990, made him the
youngest-ever men's champion (19 years, 28 days) and his most recent was
in 2002 at age 31 -- will be the site for a brief ceremony on Monday night,
August 25, to salute the man many people say is the greatest male tennis
player in history.
Sampras, who has won an unprecedented 14 Grand Slam Men's Singles titles,
has a total of 64 singles victories and has won more than 760 matches.He
was the world's top-ranked player during most of the 1990s. In addition
to his five U.S. Open Singles titles, his other Grand Slam titles include
seven Singles titles at Wimbledon and two victories at the Australian Open.
The presentation will take place in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Specifics of the
ceremony will be released later by the USTA.
