《先知詩譯》東岐明 ◎喜哀第八 然後一位婦人說：『向我們講說關於喜悅與哀愁吧！』 他回答說： 『你的喜悅是你不掩的哀愁。 　同一泉源，湧你歡笑，往往也曾滿盈在你淚水。 　那還能如何呢[1]？ 　哀愁刻鑿你的生命[2]愈深，愈多喜悅你便能容受。 　你那承托美酒的杯觴，不也曾正是那在陶窯中燒煉的胚杯嗎[3]？ 　你那撫慰心靈的琵琶[4]，不也曾正是那在刀匕下鑿空的材木嗎？ 　在你喜悅，當深觀你心；你會發現，當下正予你喜悅的，往昔必曾給你哀愁。 　在你哀愁，當再觀你心；你會明白，其實你為之悲泣的，正是由你過往歡樂。 你們之中有些人說：「喜悅大於哀愁」，而另些人說：「不！哀愁才是較大」。 但我告訴你們，它們乃是形影不離，共同到來[5]。 當其一獨自與你共餐，切記另一正酣睡你床。 你恰就似那天秤，浮懸在你喜悅與哀愁之間。 　只有在你空靈[6]時，才會靜止平衡。 　當那藏寶者提起你來秤祂金銀時，就需你悲歡哀喜的起落[7]。』 [1] 此句原文中的 it，是指陳著前面兩句所述，關於喜悅與哀愁的共生真相。後面所述 you shall find it is only that 中的 it 也是指陳著同一真相。因為此句中文語氣上不適合用「它」，所以用「那」來勉強代表 it。 [2] 此句原文中的 being，原意是指生命存在的本質。此處為求語氣通暢，便以「生命」一詞代表。 [3] 此句原文中的 wine，不僅是指「酒」，在英文意涵裏也象徵隱喻著「令人沉醉的美好事物」。此種隱喻無法以中文語詞完整表達，所以只能勉強以「美酒」一詞翻譯。而此句中的「杯觴」與「杯胚」，在原文中都僅是 cup。為了對應下句的行文語韻，所以衍生修飾詞語。 [4] 此句原文的 lute ，乃是狀似琵琶的一種西洋彈奏樂器，故用「琵琶」一詞翻譯。 [5] 此句中文翻譯，為求語氣流暢，而剪接了兩句原文。語意大致不變，只是斷句有變。 [6] 此句原文中的 empty，是指心靈空寂而無情感擾動的超凡脫俗狀態，在此勉強譯為「空靈」。 [7] 此句所謂「秤祂金銀」，乃是意味其人格品質受到神主審判。 -- JOY AND SORROW Then a woman said, "Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow." And he answered: Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit the very wood that was hollowed with knives? When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater." But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
