after some great reviews in uncut, the guardian and get rhythm, lost in tv also seems to be a bit of a hit in the rock press! these just in . . . in the early 90s, suede's unique brand of glam rock echoed through student halls of residence countrywide. while their androgynous council flat chic was far removed from the laddish retro of bands such as oasis, suede effectively cleared the way for the britpop movement that followed in their wake. lost in tv is a collection of all the videos for their singles (17 released to date) and the clever on the couch option allows you to watch the band review the promos in real time. with disarming candour they pick up on all their most annoying traits: "stop shrieking!" singer brett anderson shouts at his ertswhile self; they laugh at themselves "prancing around like tits in tower blocks"; they cringe at the pretentious, meaningless symbolism to which they were once so partial. (the funniest anecdote has to be that one of the band was hospitalised after having a violent allergic reaction to the velvet back cloth featured in animal nitrate). with rare footage of the band in the studio and on tour and a bizarre karaoke section, lost in tv is a treat for ardent suede fans. *[CLASSIC ROCK 6/6] releasing a dvd with videos, interviews and rare footage, like a sort of greatest hits collection, normally means one of two things; lack of money or the band are about to break up. in suede's case though it seems to be neither. soon to release their fifth album, brett anderson and co bring us suede: lost in tv. there is a good selection of old gigs as well as behind the scenes footage - and a section where you can watch the band commenting on their own videos, calling themselves pretentious and saying why certain videos were "a complete load of garbage". the highlight though has to be the singalong karaoke feature. when the curtains are shut you'll be holding your hairbrush pretending to be brett won't you. lost in tv is a must for all suede fans and a maybe, if you have the cash, for the rest of us. *[ROCK SOUND 4/5] --
