Kalshi’s first deal with an MLB player comes less than two months after the company announced it had partnered with five major-league teams: the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants and Braves. New York’s attorney general has litigation pending against Kalshi and Polymarket, accusing the companies of running “an illegal gambling operation.” But major sports leagues and teams have shown a willingness to accept the gray area while cozying up to what are likely to become lucrative revenue streams. Extending partnerships to players could blur the lines further, even if those relationships are limited to appearing in commercials as brand ambassadors. When Kalshi announced its deal with Antetokounmpo in February, its statement made clear that he was forbidden from trading on markets related to the NBA, “per Kalshi’s strict terms of service that ban insider trading and market manipulation.” MLB players are also prohibited from engaging with prediction markets on “ baseball event contracts.” Commissioner Rob Manfred’s office and the Major League Baseball Players Association sent a joint memo to players late in the 2025 season instructing them against risking money on any outcome related to baseball games or events. In July 2025, Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz were placed on non-disciplinary paid leave while the league investigated their involvement in a scheme to rig wagers on pitches thrown in games.
