The axe swiftly fell on McClaren less than 12 hours after the dismal 3-2 defeat by Croatia at Wembley cost England a place at Euro 2008. Former Bolton boss Allardyce was given the opportunity to apply for the national job by Reebok Stadium chairman Phil Gartside, but the Magpies appear keen to retain the services of a man they only appointed this summer. Honoured When asked if would be interested in the post, Allardyce told Sky Sports News: "No, because I'm contracted to Newcastle United, and from my point of view that contract needs to be honoured. "I'm not in the position like I was at my old club where the chairman openly extended the invitation for me to go for the position. I'm not in that position now."
