Betrayed by politics, technology and science, artists of the period began to look for new ways to reflect their experience. Their search brought artists of different disciplines and nationalities together to a degree unprecedented in history. The theatre exploded out of the drawing room, and turned for new ideas to painting, music, dance, sculpture, architecture and poetry for inspiration. We will look primarily at the experiments in these new forms as they emerged in France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Russia and Spain—and in particular at the transnational performance-languages that developed. "The war," wrote Dada founder Hugo Ball, "is founded on a glaring mistake; men have been confused with machines." For theatre students, this period provides a critical conceptual bridge between Western 19th-century naturalistic drama and the stylistically-complex theatre of the mid-20th century. Students in the course will have access to rare sound and video recordings of the period. This course will be taught in English; doctoral-level English proficiency and consent of instructor required.
