看這篇的話，很直覺的猜，(也稍微綜合參考前面的說法)
maintains只是等於像state一樣，代表一種明確的表達，
(或許用來反對一下一般可能會以為的說法)
sometimes she runs us under the table，
就是:有時(簡直)是由他在指揮我們，檯面下啦
這句其實偏中性，但是正負面意見應該都有一點，
參照前句，該老年人很敬業，連帶應該會管教其它員工，
有些人或許被感化到，但也難免會不爽。

感謝提供這連結，
用 run me under the table查，發現似乎有另一種用法，
應該是"(徹底)把我比下去"的意思...看起來更簡單更貼切，
看來我前面是想像力太豐富了。 幸好有高手救援
