痲瘋病是麻風桿菌所引起的慢性傳染疾病，主要影響皮膚、週邊神經、
上呼吸道和眼睛，造成毀容和神經敏銳度喪失。痲瘋病存在幾千年，
曾經席捲全世界。1940年代，透過公眾警覺意識加強防治和新藥物的治療，
痲瘋病幾乎受到控制(絕跡？)，但近年卻有捲土重來的趨勢；2002年全世界
麻瘋病通報案例有534,000人，而2003年期間所發現的新案例就有620,00人。
