06/02/2007 10:00 PM ET Notes: Moseley thriving in Halos bullpen Righty has 1.69 ERA and three wins since joining relief corps By Glenn Rabney / Special to MLB.com ANAHEIM -- For his entire career, Dustin Moseley has been a starting pitcher, and that is the role he started with when the Angels broke spring camp. It seemed to be a perfect fit, too, as Moseley went six innings in his first two starts, allowing one run in each and picking up one victory. Unfortunately, when Jered Weaver returned from the disabled list, there was simply no room for Moseley in the rotation, and he was moved to the bullpen. To say that he's thrived there would be an understatement. In 16 innings over the course of 12 appearances, he has an ERA of 1.69 and has picked up three more victories. In addition, with Justin Speier on the DL, Moseley became extremely valuable in setting up Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez at the back of the bullpen. For Moseley, it's all about staying with the Angels. "I've always been a starter, but it doesn't matter to me. Whatever helps the club," he said. So valuable, in fact, that when manager Mike Scioscia needed someone to step in and take Bartolo Colon's spot in the rotation on Saturday, he called up Joe Saunders from the Minors rather than disrupt the bullpen. "He's really pitching well toward the back end of some games," Scioscia said, "And until Justin Speier comes back, we might not want to disrupt that." While he's never been used out of the bullpen before this season, Moseley claims that it hasn't been that hard of a transition. "It's a little different, but not that much," Moseley said. "Just a different routine." Of course, while that gives Scioscia added depth, it also will create a little problem when Speier is healthy, a problem that most clubs would love to have. Baring any additional injuries, there doesn't look to be an opening anytime soon in the rotation, but Scioscia is more than happy to have the extra arm in the bullpen. With the bullpen working as well as it has, Scioscia also wants to avoid pulling anyone out or making someone unavailable for more days than necessary. While you have to manage the bullpen based on game situations, you also have to be aware of the effects of your decisions in the upcoming games. "You have to rearrange what you do on any given night," Scioscia said, "but you want to try and keep as many options available as possible." One of those options, as Scioscia knows, is that since Moseley was a starter, he's someone that he can call on for those extended innings when he needs it. For Moseley, it's just a matter of making himself valuable to the ballclub. "I like being in the 'pen. I really have no real preference," Moseley said. "Whatever keeps me here." The way he's pitched, he's already accomplished that objective. Vlad, Matthews set tone: Vladimir Guerrero and Gary Matthews Jr. are showing their value directly in the Angels' won-lost record. Simply put, if Guerrero and Matthews hit, then the Angels usually win. In the Halos' 34 victories, Guerrero is batting .377 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs. Even more indicative of the Angels' chances of success is Matthews's ability to score. When Matthews crosses the plate, the Angels are 22-3, and when he doesn't, they are 12-18. Luckily for the Angels, he's scored 35 times so far, second on the club to Orlando Cabrera's 36. Down on the Farm: Triple-A Salt Lake outfielder Nick Gorneault went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs as the Bees defeated Oklahoma, 7-5, in Friday's Pacific Coast League game. Gorneault now has six home runs and has driven in 19. Though hitting just .218, he has made his presence felt on the basepaths with nine stolen bases this season. At Class A Cedar Rapids, catcher Hank Conger and designated hitter Mark Trumbo both went 3-for-4 as the Kernels beat the Peoria Chiefs, 5-3. Trumbo had a home run and two RBIs, bringing his season totals to five and 29. Conger, with an RBI also has 29 for the season to go along with seven home runs, seven stolen bases and a .280 average. On deck: Ervin Santana (4-6, 5.48 ERA) takes the mound on Sunday for the Angels, who conclude their four-game series against the Orioles. Jeremy Guthrie (3-1, 3.02 ERA) will throw for Baltimore in a 12:35 PT start at Angel Stadium. --
