Youngsters from the Philippines in Spain found that in Spain no one cared whether they were Chinese descended, creoles, mestizos, etc. They were all "Filipinos," whereas in the colony these groups were sharply delineated, antagonistic, and socially extremely visible. In the colony "Filipino" meant only creole. Today in the US no one really cares you come from China or Japan, Indonesia or Malaysia -- you are all "Asians."
