He is expected to be ready by spring training in late February. Gagne, 30, had 152 saves as the Dodgers' closer from 2002 to 2004, including 55 in 2003. At one point, the right-handed reliever converted a major league-record 84 consecutive save opportunities. Gagne had surgery last April to remove a nerve from his pitching elbow — the same arm that required elbow-ligament replacement surgery in 1997. Akinori Otsuka was the Rangers' closer for most of last season and finished with 32 saves. But he'll likely move into an eighth-inning setup role in front of Gagne. The Rangers have also received a number of trade inquiries about Otsuka, but general manager Jon Daniels said he's not inclined to move him unless they get something significant in return.
