IWU coach Dennis Martel is glad he gave Lapinski another chance, and Lapinski has proven more than talented enough to take advantage. "He (Martel) always knew I was a pitcher. I could throw, but I didn't really throw a lot of strikes," Lapinski said. "I really don't throw a lot of strikes now. But I've toned it down and worked on it, and this year it seemed to work out." A hard-throwing junior left-hander, Lapinski has emerged as the most dominant pitcher in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with a 7-0 record and a 2.20 ERA. Even more impressive, Lapinski has allowed a mere 26 hits in 49 innings, he has 85 strikeouts and has allowed opponents a paltry.151 batting average. "Cory has always been one of those guys who had the ability, but we never knew if he would be able to harness it," said Titans' catcher Jason Shearn. "We figured if he could throw strikes he would be unstoppable. And that's what he's doing this year." Lapinski is throwing more strikes, but he still has issued a team-high 33 walks. That wildness was much worse when Martel tried Lapinski on the mound before the 2004 season. "We had an intrasquad game and the first day he walked six guys in a row. He was really just awful," Martel said. "I said 'this experiment is over. We've got enough pitching.'" Yet Lapinski, who batted a team-high.397 with 42 RBI as the Titans' center fielder last spring, still threw on occasion in the bullpen or during batting practice. And when Martel decided to use Lapinski on the mound in game action late in the season, he responded with three perfect innings and five strikeouts over three appearances. "When we came back in the fall, my first thought was he was going to be a closer. But he may throw you a rally before he closes the game for you," said the IWU coach. "Then we decided to make him a starter, and he's really done a great job." Lapinski features a blazing fastball that has reached 91 mph, a wicked curve ball and a changeup he is utilizing more late in the season. "It's nice being a lefty and throwing that hard," said the 6-foot, 210-pounder. "I don't work on hitting a lot of spots. I just kind of blow it by people. My curve is pretty good. I get a lot of guys chasing the curve ball down and away or down and in on righties." The curve is particularly devastating to batters who must look for the fastball or surely be overmatched by it. "When he gets that thing over for a strike, he's almost unhittable because it breaks over two planes," Martel said. "Down and across." Shearn senses trepidation from batters stepping in to face Lapinski. "He throws hard and he's got the major league curve ball," Shearn said. "It's tough for them. I feel bad for them sometimes. But we've got some games to win." Lapinski may get the chance to win games on the professional level. Many scouts have taken in Lapinski performances this spring. He is a possible pick in June's first-year player draft. "He's a little bit of a project. He's not a finished product. He really had two years off (from pitching)," Martel said. "Scouts like his breaking ball. It's a difference maker. From his first game this year to now, he has greatly improved." Lapinski is more focused on the CCIW Tournament that begins today at Horenberger Field. "I know people have been saying scouts are at the games, and that might be a possibility," Lapinski said. "But I'm really not thinking about that right now. I want to win the conference tournament and hopefully go to the (Division III) World Series." An outfielder when not pitching, Lapinski's batting average is down to.286. Yet his power production remains strong with a team-leading 11 home runs. His 39 RBI are behind only teammate Nick Chilczenkowski's 41. "When I'm pitching, I try to focus in on my pitching," he said.
