1999 Astros #1 Lance Berkman Background: After not being drafted out of high school, Berkman rose to prominence at Rice, where he led the NCAA with 41 home runs and 134 RBIs as a junior before joining his hometown organization. He has dominated minor league pitching the same way he dominated college pitching. Barely a year after signing, Berkman was promoted to Triple-A and in his third game at New Orleans, he hit three home runs. He turned the same trick again in the clinching game of the inaugural Triple-A World Series, a series in which he was the MVP. Strengths: Berkman has shown just about every offensive skill you would want to find in a run producer. He is a switch-hitter with well above-average raw power from both sides of the plate. His swing is still quick and compact, enabling him to make consistent contact and maintain a high batting average. Berkman's patience at the plate is extraordinary for a young hitter and in his first full year he finished fifth in the minor leagues with 97 walks. Defensively, Berkman's conversion to left field from first base has been successful. He gets good jumps on fly balls, has an average left-field arm and is surprisingly sure-handed. Weaknesses: Berkman is a much stronger hitter from the left side, where he is more patient and benefits from having more at-bats. He played with a sore right ankle throughout much of 1998, which made him more of a front-foot hitter from the right side and took away his power. While Berkman is mobile in the outfield and a good straight-ahead runner, he's primarily a station-to-station runner on the basepaths. The Future: The master plan is for Berkman to take over in left field, with Moises Alou moving to right. When this will happen depends on Derek Bell's status. Bell enjoyed the best year of his career last season but this is the last year of his contract. Even if any trade rumors involving Bell are unfounded, it would not be a surprise if Berkman's production didn't surpass Bell's and give the already high-powered Astros offense another potent weapon. 2001 Astros #1 Roy Oswalt Background: One way the Astros try to keep player-development costs down is by using the draft-and-follow process. They identify raw players and try to sign them after they refine their skills in junior college. Their best work may have been done with Oswalt, though he didn’t come cheap. He blossomed so much that he would have been a first-round pick had Houston not handed him a $500,000 bonus. He started 2000 at high Class A Kissimmee before being promoted to Double-A Round Rock for what was supposed to be one emergency start. When Oswalt responded with a 15-strikeout shutout, he never looked back. He led Texas League starters in strikeouts (9.8) and fewest hits (7.4) per nine innings, and his 1.94 ERA was the circuit’s lowest in a decade. While Round Rock was winning the league playoffs, Oswalt was in Sydney with the U.S. Olympic team. He contributed to the gold-medal effort with two strong starts in wins against bronze-medalist Korea, allowing two runs in 13 innings. Strengths: Oswalt pitched under control in 2000, which is why his career took off. He still pitches up in the strike zone at times, but for the most part he worried about painting the black at 92-94 mph rather than trying to reach back and throw 96. Righthanders have absolutely no chance when he throws his heat knee-high on the outside corner. He hides the ball well, and when he doesn’t try to max out his velocity, his fastball explodes out of his hand with late life. Oswalt’s curveball jumps straight down, and his changeup at times is a third above-average pitch. He’s stingy with walks and home runs and limited lefthanders to a .201 average in Double-A. He’s a warrior who always gives his best effort. Weaknesses: Oswalt needs to remember that less is more when it comes to his fastball, that he has more command and movement when he throws in the low 90s. He needs more consistency with his curveball and changeup, which he doesn ’t always finish off. The Future: If he continues to progress like he did last year, Oswalt will be ready for Houston after a half-season in Triple-A. He has the stuff to be a No. 1 starter down the road. Thank You! Oswalt是这10年 我有再看太空人的scouting report当中 唯一一个让BA说他有三种plus pitch而且有command的SP....... 当然有很多人有flash potential 之类的.... 即使现在满满的SP小朋友都没有人有三种还能有command Appel有最接近[变速只有平均]的球种评价 滑球的command还有问题 而且两个人在投手丘上的pose和Roy的气势天差地远 Appel看起来就像一个很温和的大个子 Roy那个脸就是想把你打死的矮子.... Berkman也是这10年来唯一一个我们家BA对他打击几乎没挑剔的打者 除了右打鸟蛋 ~.~" 而且肥仔还证明他比BA说的还更会跑一点 XDDD 肥仔之後最好的打者Pence追打外角坏球到现在还没完全医好 Towles最後也如BA所料他只会拉打 拉到最後就掰掰了 Correa目前BA对他的评价是不低於肥仔的 也只有他的top 100 ranking高过肥仔 但是他现在还是在低阶成长曲线还会有变化..... 希望他可以是真货! --
