标题[外电] Yanks able to rest easy behind Wang
时间Sun Aug 26 14:48:51 2007
Yanks able to rest easy behind Wang

DETROIT --
When Friday night's game was delayed by rain, the Yankees ordered Chien-Ming
Wang back to the team hotel with instructions to rest up for last night's
start.
Wang stayed up past his bedtime.
But he wound up with plenty of rest, and last night he got himself and the
Yankees back on course.
Wang allowed one earned run in eight innings, and the Yankees downed the
Detroit Tigers, 7-2, at Comerica Park.
"We needed Wang to throw a good game," catcher Jorge Posada said. "We went
through a lot (Friday) night, and Wang really stepped up today.
"It's important for him to be like he was today: more relaxed, keep the
ball down, make hitters swing at his pitches."
Over his previous three starts, Wang had allowed 26 hits in 14 2/3 innings.
Last night he gave up just five hits -- all singles -- and helped rest the
relievers.
"He had an edge to him," manager Joe Torre said.
Before last night's game, Torre called the Yankees together for a brief
meeting and told them to "move on" from the previous night: a defeat that
ended at 3:29 a.m.
"We talk about tough things to deal with all the time," Torre said just
before the meeting. "This was two tough losses on this road trip. And we
knew as badly as we started the season, that if we were going to get back
into it, it was going to be a lot of hard work.
"We just have to make sure that we think about 'now' and not lament about
something we can't do anything about."
Wang missed the outcome of the series opener.
Although he was told to leave Comerica Park at about 11:30 p.m., he stuck
around in the dugout for five innings. Wang got to bed by 1:30 a.m. and
woke up to find out the Yankees had suffered a painful defeat.
Wang (15-6) made sure it didn't become a losing streak.
"It just looked like he was his old self," Torre said.
Torre and pitching coach Ron Guidry have been encouraging Wang to rely more
on his devastating, two-seam fastball and not be distracted by baserunners.
Guidry said allowing eight runs in 2 2/3 innings Aug. 8 at Toronto "mentally
messed him up a lot."
Wang got the message.
"Before, I was trying to make a good pitch on the corner," he said. "Today
I just threw it over the plate."
Guidry saw the signs earlier in the week.
"We talked a good bit in the bullpen the other day in Anaheim," Guidry said.
"We threw with the idea of being aggressive in the bullpen.
"I told him, 'OK, look, this is a game. Throw this bullpen like it's a game.
You've got to be aggressive. You've got to throw your pitches.'
"He worked great in the bullpen the other day. That was probably the best
I've ever seen him throw in the bullpen. Because the stuff that he had in
the bullpen he could have pitched a no-hitter that day, that's how good it
was. But that's because it was aggressive stuff."
The Yankees last night tagged Jeremy Bonderman (10-7) for seven runs on eight
hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. Bonderman, who did not record a
strikeout, is 0-6 with an 8.78 ERA over his past seven starts.
Hideki Matsui went 3-for-5 to raise his average to a season-high .308,
and Johnny Damon homered and tripled.
Damon has hit .364 since ending a 0-for-20 on July 20.
"He's got a lot of life in his body," Torre said. "It may have taken him
a little longer to get in game shape."
Damon's rebound makes it harder for Torre to find playing time for Jason
Giambi, since Torre is reluctant to play Giambi at first, making both players
primarily a designated hitter.
But a couple of times a week, like last night, Damon plays left field so
Matsui can be the DH.
In 18 starts at DH, Matsui has hit .347 with 23 RBI. The Yankees are 14-4
in those games.
"I don't know what the numbers are," Matsui said through interpreter Roger
Kahlon, "but to DH on occasional basis to me is kind of refreshing."
