Fri Mar 1 11:05:18 2013
Knicks' Melo talks about Sandy relief, 'reinventing' himself on 'Charlie Rose'
Brooklyn-born Carmelo Anthony, in a taped appearance on "Charlie Rose"
tonight, spoke about his relief efforts after Hurricane Sandy in making
several visits to his devastated hometown, Red Hook.
(Red Hook is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, U.S.A. )
“That's something that I love to do genuinely, like, nobody have to tell me,
'Sandy just hit and you should go back to Red Hook,'" Anthony said, according
to an excerpt. “I know in my heart. I knew Red Hook was devastated, I knew
Coney Island was devastated, and we sat down, 'This is where we're going at.
We're going back to Red Hook, whoever don't want to come, don't come. We're
going to Coney Island where there's no lights.'"
Coney Island
Anthony moved from Brooklyn to Baltimore when he was 9. “This is me and I'm
a representation of that area, of Red Hook,’’ Anthony added. “And, you
know, nobody claims Red Hook, so sometimes Red Hook gets overlooked in a lot
of things out here in New York. Sometimes Coney Island gets overlooked in a
lot of things out here in New York. Sometimes Far Rockaway get overlooked in
a lot of things out here, so, if I can give back and do what I can to help
those communities, then I'm going to do it.’’
Anthony, who is in the middle of an MVP-type campaign, also talked about “
reinventing’’ himself this season after a disappointing first 1 ½ seasons
in New York.
“I had to really put that year and a half that I've been here and just kind
of wipe it off the table and say, I want to start off with a clean plate
everything,’’ Anthony said. “I want to start off with a clean plate. I'm
coming to this season with a clean plate, off the court, on the court. I'm
reinventing myself.’’
Asked by Rose what it means to play for the NBA’s oldest team, Anthony said,
“Yeah, we'll take that, we'll take that. I'll take that. I mean, it's like,
I compare it to pilots, because either you want to go fly with a 10-year vet
or you want a two-year vet to fly your plane, which one do you want?’’
