Look past what happens at the end of the game. Start with the final score: Detroit 79, Cavaliers 76. It was that way in Game 2 on Thursday at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The same score as Monday's opener in the same building. In the final seconds, LeBron James passed off in Game 1. In Game 2, he tried to drive and thought he was fouled. The officials had another opinion. No matter what James did, it wasn't enough. But the Cavs' problems are so much deeper than what James does on the last possession. If they want to win this series with the Pistons, they can start by winning the third quarter. In two playoff games with the Pistons, the Cavs have been outscored by 16 points in the third quarter. You can blame coaching. You can blame experience. You can blame a lack of variety in the offense. You'd be right about all of that and more, like the total playoff collapse of Larry Hughes (6-of-22 shooting vs. Detroit). Hughes had a wide-open eight-footer with about six seconds left that could have given the Cavs a lead, but he clanged if off the rim. Hughes has zero confidence in his shot right now. The bottom line is you can't win in the playoffs scoring 76 points. Part of the reason the Cavs are stuck on 76 is what happens after halftime. They can't score. They struggle on defense. They don't adapt to what the opponents are doing, and then they scramble to catch up in the final 12 minutes. The Cavs had a stunning 50-38 halftime lead in this game. They were outscored 22-13 in the third quarter. In Game 1, it was a 41-36 lead, then they were outscored 21-14 in the third quarter. Even more disturbing, this pattern was part of the six-game series with the New Jersey Nets, where the Cavs won the third quarter only once! That's once in six games against the Nets. That's none in two games against the Pistons. That means in eight playoff games, the Cavs have been outscored in the third quarter in seven of them. That's not coincidence. That's not an accident. That's being outscored by an average of nearly eight points in the third quarters of their eight playoff games. Since most of these playoff games are in the 80-point range, the Cavs looking flat and slow in the third quarter is changing the course of the games. So what's happening? ``They come out of the locker room and they are ready to rock and roll,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said of the Pistons. Meanwhile, the Cavs must be listening to lullabies at halftime. ``They definitely have a good plan coming out for the third quarter,'' James said. ``We haven't been a good third-quarter team all year. I don't know why. ``That's something we've got to figure out or very soon we're going home.'' Brown has to realize that starters Hughes and Drew Gooden are struggling. He needs to use Anderson Varejao more often. He needs to surround James with more shooters, because Detroit is surrounding him with two or three defenders. Brown has to make adjustments. He has to use his bench more often. He has to realize that defense is important, but you also need to make some shots to win. Right now, Hughes (37-of-118 shooting) is dragging down the offense, and the ragged, slow pace of these games requires stand-still shooters. They have two in Damon Jones and Daniel Gibson, who can play next to Sasha Pavlovic. Brown must keep using Varejao as part of the high pick-and-roll with James. It would be nice if he could figure out a way to get better shots for Zydrunas Ilgauskas, but that has been a trouble spot for two years. But here's the point: Close playoff games often turn after halftime and at the end of the game.
