The league's reigning MVP was fined $25,000 for criticizing officials after Monday's home victory against the Knicks. Uncharacteristically, Rose told reporters: "I got to be the only superstar in the league going through what I'm going through right now." Point guards, even those of the superstar variety, often seem to have a more difficult time gaining officials' respect. "I always tried to let the officials know that what they call a touch or a bump from a guy who weighs 100 pounds more than you … and is probably five or six inches taller than you … it is not a bump to you," Isiah Thomas said this week with his familiar cackle. "I just think (Rose) has to keep making his case." Rose says he respects the advice from the Hall of Fame point guard and fellow Chicagoan, who is now the coach at Florida International and was in Chicago this week watching high school players. "(Players) who go to the basket a lot … those small bumps and those small hits … you may be athletic enough to recover from them … but they are still fouls," Thomas said. "Sometimes you get penalized for your athleticism and your ability to take a hit and make a shot whereas another guard (who can't) finish the play … gets the benefit of the two free throws. But if you finish the play, sometimes you don't get the benefit of the free throw." Thomas, a 12-time All-Star who led the Pistons to two NBA titles, says that though he believes the game was more physical when he played in the 1980s and '90s at least he was sent to the line. "Officials respect the people who play the game hard first, and play it right second," he said. "Playing hard … they respect that because they are running up and down the court, too. If a guy is not playing hard, they have like zero respect for him, and he's not getting the benefit of any foul call. As that guy shouldn't." Thomas respects Rose's style of play and roots for him and his hometown team. "Here's what I do know about guards such as ourselves," Thomas said. "Very rarely … do you see a guard from Chicago complaining. Guys who grew up here … you play and whatever happens, happens. But when we do complain or open our mouths, refs do listen because it's not the nature of the Chicago guards to say anything to the officials, other than, 'I'm kicking this guy's ass.'" --
