The NBA confirmed to the Sun Sentinel on Saturday that one of the hard fouls during Wednesday's Miami Heat loss to the Chicago Bulls at the United Center has been upgraded to a flagrant foul. The play in question, a shooting foul on Chicago power forward Taj Gibson against James, came with 2:37 remaining in the first quarter of what turned into a 101-97 loss that ended the Heat's 27-game winning streak, six victories shy of the NBA-record winning streak of the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. James made both free throws following the foul. Because there was no flagrant foul called at the time, there was no video review. However, had the flagrant foul been assessed during the game, instead of after the fact, the Heat also would have retained possession following James' free throws. Instead, the Bulls pushed back to an 11-point lead immediately after James' foul shots. In the wake of the loss, James questioned the lack of flagrant calls on a hard foul by Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich and a later foul by Gibson that included a swipe across James' neck. Those two plays remained as common fouls, still classified as such. Late in that loss, James was called for a flagrant foul for throwing a shoulder into Bulls forward Carlos Boozer while fighting through a screen. In the wake of James' postgame questioning Wednesday of hard fouls he has endured this season, he came under criticism in radio interviews by Gibson and Boston Celtics executive Danny Ainge.
