The addition of Griffin is the first hire for Scott Skiles’ coaching staff. Griffin spent the last five seasons as a Chicago Bulls assistant coach. Before that, he worked for the Milwaukee Bucks under Skiles as an assistant coach for player development. In NBA.com’s 2014-15 GM Survey, general managers were asked to name the league’s best assistant coach. Griffin tied for second place with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Tyronn Lue, the San Antonio Spurs’ Ettore Messina and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Mike Woodson. Griffin also spent the summer of 2014 working with USA Basketball’s men’s national team as it won the gold medal in the FIBA World Cup. Griffin, 40, played nine NBA seasons, with stints with the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Bulls and Seattle SuperSonics. In 2012, the Magic wanted to consider Griffin for a role on Jacque Vaughn’s coaching staff. But the Bulls denied the Magic’s request to interview Griffin. Circumstances were different this time around. The Bulls fired coach Tom Thibodeau after the postseason and hired Fred Hoiberg as Thibodeau’s replacement. The change left Griffin and fellow Bulls assistant coaches Ed Pinckney and Mike Wilhelm in limbo. And, over the weekend, the Bulls hired Jim Boylen of the San Antonio Spurs as Hoiberg’s lead assistant. Skiles is working on filling out the rest of his coaching staff. Skiles wants to retain James Borrego, who has spent the last three seasons with the Magic, first as the lead assistant coach and later as the interim head coach. But Skiles is giving Borrego time to consider other opportunities.
