D-Backs wrap up 2005, look to 2006
Arizona's GM search first item on offseason agenda
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
Jeff
SAN FRANCISCO -- As the Diamondbacks put the finishing touches on their 2005
season Sunday, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Giants at SBC Park, the team's
general partner, Jeff Moorad, already had his eyes on the future.
First up on his to-do list is finding a general manager to replace Joe
Garagiola Jr., who left the club to join Major League Baseball in August.
Moorad spent some time during the game talking by phone with a prospective
candidate.
"We expect to finish the process of receiving permission from clubs that
have individuals that we're interested in and begin our interviews as soon as
possible," Moorad said. "I would imagine we would begin talking with
candidates towards the end of this coming week."
The loss, which ended the D-Backs' season-high seven-game winning streak,
couldn't put a damper on the fact that the club finished strong by winning
10 of its final 12 games to nab second place in the National League West.
Joe
Garagiola
The D-Backs hope their recent hot streak will carry over to next season,
but before then, the team must settle on a new GM and decide how much to
tinker with the roster that finished five games behind the Padres with a
77-85 record, 26 games better than last year.
According to the club, interim GM Bob Gebhard will be the only internal
candidate interviewed, and Moorad said the team would not comment during
the process. He did, however, share his thoughts on a variety of subjects.
On the number of candidates he expects to interview: "More than five, less
than 10, but still floating a bit. We intend to stay flexible as well, to
the extent that if someone becomes available that we haven't had in the
process at the early stage, we'll certainly have the flexibility to reach
out and include them if we think that's appropriate."
On whether there is any particular characteristic the candidates will have
in common: "I think we're open-minded about the profile. The group that we've
identified tends to be a younger group, but also a group that has significant
experience. We don't look at this as a short-term hire. Ideally, we'd like
our next general manager to have the kind of tenure Joe Garagiola had and
potentially more."
On how waiting until Nov. 1 to hire a GM would impact their offseason plans:
"In a perfect world, we'd have that person in place today. Obviously, they're
not. The process needs to play itself out. We're not afraid to make early
moves to the extent we feel necessary. On the other hand, we look forward to
our permanent general manager being part of the process going forward."
On how active the team will be in making deals or signing free agents: "For
sure, there will be some moves that we'll make in the offseason. How
significant remains to be seen. I think the club has shown an awful lot in
the couple of weeks closing out the season and really, I think, given all of
us a confidence that we do have the right nucleus on the field. I think the
goal at this point is to make some adjustments -- certainly to tweak the
roster a bit. But I'm not sure that wholesale changes are required. I think
we'll certainly be open-minded about the free-agent market. I think the
free-agent market is a thinner one than in years past, but again, we have
some needs. We'd like to improve our production at the catcher position.
We're committed to going into next season with as close to a bulletproof
bullpen as we can get."
On the bullpen, which struggled before putting together a good run at the end
of the season: "I'm pleased with the progress of the bullpen over the last
couple of weeks. I think we can all see the value of the veterans like Buddy
Groom and Tim Worrell. And we see the emergence of Brandon Medders as well as
the re-emergence of Jose Valverde. All of that gives me a good feeling ending
the season and looking forward to next year."
Tim
Jose Valverde
On the payroll, which went from $80 million last year to just under $60
million in 2005: "The lion's share of the payroll adjusting has occurred.
At this point, if anything, we'll maintain some payroll flexibility in order
to help the team going forward and to allow us to put the most competitive
product we can on the field."
On outfielder Luis Gonzalez, who has one year remaining on his contract at
$11.5 million plus a club option for 2007 at $10 million: "At this point,
Luis and I have talked. I've also talked with his representative, Greg
Genske, and we've committed to each other that we're not going to speculate
publicly about his future. We'll sit down with him at the end of the season
and determine his thoughts about his future, and obviously, we'll share ours
with him. But beyond that, it's business as usual with Luis Gonzalez. He has
another year under contract with us and an option year after that, and I
don't see any reason for daily updates on Luis Gonzalez. At this point, he's
our left fielder and a terrific part of our organization's history and
presumably a part of its future."
