How much will Jackson contribute? Much has been made about the 37 home runs the Diamondbacks lost by trading Glaus to the Blue Jays, but with Clark moving into a backup role so Jackson can start at first, that's another 30 homers missing from the lineup. The Diamondbacks don't expect Jackson to hit 30 homers, but if their offense is to be as good as last year's, he'll have to be a major contributor. The 23- year-old has the tools and seems to have the right mindset for success in the Majors. He got some valuable experience in the big leagues last season and has nothing left to prove in the Minors. 2. Is the bullpen better? Last year, the Diamondbacks bullpen was on pace to be one of the worst statistically in Major League history before a solid September made their numbers a bit less ugly. Essentially the same crew is back for 2006 and yet the club expects the 'pen to be much improved. That's because Arizona added a couple of pitchers it feels good about and expects improvement from some of the bullpen's younger members. The Diamondbacks got Vizcaino in the Vazquez trade and the right-hander has proven to be a reliable reliver with a resilient arm over the past few years. In addition, the D-Backs think they unearthed a gem in veteran Grimsley, who pitched well last September for Baltimore and whose sinker makes him a good fit in Chase Field. Another reason for optimism is closer Valverde, who seemed to put things together in the second half last year. Right-hander Medders also pitched very well in his first taste of the big leagues and the club expects him to only get better with more experience 3. Can Ortiz rebound? When the Diamondbacks gave Ortiz a four-year deal before last season, they thought they were getting a pitcher that would win games and chew up innings. They got neither in 2005 as Ortiz struggled with his command and put far too many runners on base. To make things even more painful for him, he suffered a rib injury and spent time on the disabled list for the first time in his career. The D-Backs need a bounceback season from Ortiz in the worst way. The bottom line With the starting lineup all but set, the spring will give manager Bob Melvin a chance to tinker with his batting order to try and find the right combinations. He will also use the time to evaluate prospects Drew, Quentin and Chris Young. From a pitching standpoint, Melvin will need to figure out who will fill the No. 5 spot in the rotation and assess newcomers like Batista and Hernandez. The biggest competition will be in the bullpen. It appears that Valverde will be the closer, but Melvin will need to figure out who will set him up as well as who will fill out the final few spots. --
