Jerry Dipoto
Toms River, N.J.
Position: Director of Professional Scouting.
Dipoto's decision to walk away from his playing career was made easy by what
the doctors told him.
Dipoto
"They said, 'If you keep doing this, you could wind up in a wheelchair,' " he
said.
Dipoto, who spent eight years in the major leagues, twice herniated a disk in
his neck and had to retire during spring training of 2001 when doctors inserted
a metal plate, along with a bone from his hip, into his spine.
It didn't take him long to find a new gig. The day after he retired, Rockies GM
Dan O'Dowd offered him a job with the club in which he worked in a number of
different capacities. He knew quickly baseball operations was for him.
Also in the Colorado front office at the time was Byrnes, who first met Dipoto
when the two were in the Cleveland organization together, Byrnes an intern and
Dipoto a young pitcher.
When Byrnes left for Boston, he recruited Dipoto to join him as a scout. After
two years with the Red Sox, Dipoto returned to Colorado before coming to
Arizona.
Ever since he was a kid, Dipoto says he's been something of a student of the
game. That worked to his advantage as a pitcher who didn't have overpowering
stuff.
When talking about the parallels between pitching and scouting, his passion for
the game is palpable.
"As a scout, that's what you're doing," he said. "You're picking out the
deficiencies in a game. You're identifying the strengths. You're dissecting all
the pieces and putting them back together, building the puzzle."
Chad MacDonald
Arlington, Texas.
Position: Assistant Director of Scouting.
MacDonald doesn't have an Ivy League degree, but he has something he considers
just as valuable.
"I had a Harvard education in baseball," he said.
During high school and college, MacDonald spent parts of seven seasons as a
batboy for his hometown Texas Rangers, seeing more than 500 games from a
big-league dugout.
"It was an eye opener," he said
After playing in college, he hooked on with the Rangers as a baseball
operations assistant, helping in all phases, even throwing batting practice and
charting pitches.
In 1994, he moved to a similar position with Cleveland, where he befriended
Byrnes, then an Indians intern.
"We were compatible," MacDonald said. "Two guys not making a whole lot of money
, single, working a lot of hours. It was an instant friendship."
But during the strike, MacDonald was let go and went back to Arlington, where
he ran camps, clinics and a hitting facility. When Byrnes was promoted to
Cleveland's scouting director, he rehired MacDonald as a scout.
MacDonald spent three years with the Indians and three years scouting for the
Angels before Byrnes lured him to Arizona with a position that's a blend of
scouting and player development.
What MacDonald most enjoys about his new gig is the atmosphere.
"It's the interaction," he said. "It's seeing an idea come to fruition. It's
trying to find a big leaguer in the draft, building a club, seeing how area
scouts and cross-checkers work together. We've got a great group of guys."
