Beat reporter Steve Gilbert answers D-Backs fans' questions
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
If the Diamondbacks' downward spiral continues, do you see the team bringing
up some of the young position-player prospects anytime soon? -- Bryan L.,
Yuma, Ariz.
I think that the longer the struggles continue at the Major League level, the
harder it will be for the front office to resist the temptation to bring up
some of the young talent at Triple-A Tucson.
I think it's important to keep in mind that if they were to decide to bring
up some of the prospects, it wouldn't be because they were giving up on the
2006 season, but rather because they feel like the prospects could help them
more this year and in the future.
A lot of fans fell in love with the "Baby Backs" in 2003, but what we're
looking at now in Triple-A is a level of prospects that far exceeds the
previous version. Scott Hairston, Chris Young, Carlos Quentin and Stephen
Drew are all players that could be All-Stars in the big leagues.
Hairston
When the D-Backs start transitioning to the younger players depends on a
number of factors, including how long their current woes last, but it's only
a matter of time before the process begins.
Any news on Drew? Will he be called up at all this year? -- Abel W., San
Diego
Drew was recently selected to participate in the Future's Game as part of
next month's All-Star Game festivities. He's currently playing very well at
Tucson and arguably could be in the big leagues right now, except there isn't
a spot for him with Craig Counsell at short and Orlando Hudson at second.
Could that change?
It's certainly possible that at some point the D-Backs could elect to trade
either Counsell or Hudson and open up a spot for Drew. If Hudson were dealt,
Counsell could move to second with Drew playing short.
Has Brandon Webb begun losing confidence in the defense, again? There have
been some crazy plays behind him (along with poor run support, lately) and he
doesn't seem as aggressive. We had a double-play machine for a while, yet now,
many more balls get through. Walks allowed are increasing, and Webb himself
seems different. I see a circular problem.
-- Barbara T., Tucson, Ariz.
I don't think so. The last three weeks have taken a toll on everyone and I
think if Webb is guilty of anything it's in trying too hard to stop the
losing streak.
Why are the Diamondbacks calling up Hairston when they have Quentin waiting
to be called up?
-- Rex R., Mesa, Ariz.
I would say there are a couple of factors at work here. First, Hairston had
better numbers than Quentin. Second, Hairston is on the 40-man roster,
whereas Quentin isn't. It wouldn't make sense to add Quentin to the 40-man
for a callup that was only supposed to be for a few days.
What happened to Mike Koplove? Is he going to be called up to the
Diamondbacks this year?
-- Sophia G., Mesa, Ariz.
It's been a pretty tough stretch for Koplove over the past 10 months. He
struggled last year and after being demoted in the second half, he was placed
on waivers and taken off the 40-man roster. No team claimed him because he
was owed $1.2 million for 2006 based on the two-year contract he signed
before the 2005 season. That contract has turned out to be both a blessing
and a curse for Koplove. It obviously gave him financial security, but it's
also a reason why he's still stuck in Triple-A with the Diamondbacks.
No team wanted to claim him last year and pick up that salary and that's also
the reason a team doesn't want to trade for him, even though the D-Backs
wouldn't ask for much in return. Also, Arizona hasn't wanted to release him
and pay him the $1.2 million to go pitch for another organization. The
D-Backs are also deep in right-handed relievers, which reduces the likelihood
that Arizona will call him up.
Great young leadoff batters are not available very often. Recent rumors are
surfacing that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays may be shopping Carl Crawford. Why
don't the D-Backs make a move for him? This would give them a player with
speed on the bases, a bat for average and emerging power, and youth. We
certainly have the farm system to make a run for this talented player. Why
should the D-Backs sit back and watch the Dodgers make a move for someone who
could really help us?
-- William G., Phoenix
William, I don't believe the D-Backs have any interest in Crawford simply
because they have their own talented outfielders in Triple-A Tucson, at least
two of which it can be argued have a bigger upside than Crawford. Speaking of
talented leadoff hitters, I think you're going to be excited when you get
your first glimpse of Young in center field, who has that rare combination of
power and speed.
I would say there are a couple of factors at work here. First, Hairston had
