http://tinyurl.com/z3673 07/18/2006 9:05 PM ET Notes: Pena recalled to replace Clark D-Backs to go with eight relievers, only four bench players PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks opted to add depth to their bullpen rather than to the bench when the club decided to call up right-handed reliever Tony Pena from Triple-A Tucson on Tuesday. Pena, who was a starter but converted to a reliever in Spring Training, will be filling first baseman Tony Clark's roster spot. Clark has been experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder for some time and was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday. With the addition of Pena, the D-Backs have eight relievers in the bullpen and four players on the bench, which will limit the team's ability to make double-switches. D-Backs manager Bob Melvin said the decision to call up Pena rather than a position player was made to give the pitcher some big-league experience. "We've got eight relievers down there in the bullpen," Melvin said. "We have enough. Obviously in the National League, a four-man bench is a little bit dicey. We'll see how long we can go with this. But this is a guy that we wanted to get here and take a look at it. We haven't been -- knock on wood -- in too many positions where we've used up our position players to the point where we don't have at least one guy sitting on the bench even in an extra-inning game." The young pitcher has been impressive since being called up to the Sidewinders, where he has posted a 3-1 record to go along with seven saves and a 1.71 ERA. "He really took to the relief role," said A.J. Hinch, manager of D-Backs minor league operations. "[He] made the adjustments he had to make and has taken off. He raced through two levels this year and deserved this opportunity. I'm excited for him." Pena did not appear apprehensive when he talked to reporters shortly before Tuesday's game against the Dodgers. "I am happy to have the chance to be here," he said. "I'm not nervous at all, I know these guys and I know what they want from me. I am going to work hard, do my best and with the help of God, I will pitch good. My goal here is to win. You have to win to stay here." Melvin said that Clark, who first injured his shoulder a few weeks ago while taking some hacks in the batting cage, is not expected to need surgery. "It's [been] on and off bothering him for probably at least three weeks or so," Melvin said. "It just wasn't getting any better and a lot of it has to do with his work ethic. He's down there at two o'clock every day and taking a lot of swings and doing a lot of work that probably just didn't allow his shoulder to rest and get better." He'll be back: Everyday starting first baseman Conor Jackson was held out of the lineup for the second straight day after he strained his shoulder on Sunday when he was applying a tag to the Brewers' Prince Fielder. Jackson is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday and was available to pinch-hit on Tuesday. "We'll give Conor one more day," Melvin said. "He could play [Tuesday]. He's healthy enough to play [Tuesday], I just want to make sure he's 100 percent." Former first baseman Shawn Green has started at first the past two days in Jackson's absence and has shown no signs of rustiness at his old position. Getting there: Outfielder Scott Hairston, who has been sidelined with a right shoulder injury since June 20, will be making a couple of rehabilitation appearances with Tucson this weekend. Hairston most likely will serve as a designated hitter as the Sidewinders play the Salt Lake Bees in a three-game series that starts Friday. "It's a guy who's swinging the bat very well and hot -- to expect him [to take] just a couple days to be back to midseason form is probably a stretch," Melvin said. "We'll just play that one day by day." Hairston said that waiting for his return to the big leagues will not be a problem for him. He missed a good chunk of last season when he dislocated his left shoulder. "I've gotten used to being patient," he said. "The last couple of years, it hasn't been too hard for me." Up next: The Dodgers and Diamondbacks duel in game three of the four-game set on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 6:40 p.m. MST. Miguel Batista (8-5, 4.94 ERA) will be opposed by Derek Lowe (7-6, 3.98 ERA). ---- 结果最後是Pena。 Quentin您就再等等吧!XD --
