Webb's pitching elbow is sore and needs rest. Dustin Nippert is expected to start in his place, the rookie's first appearance since a spot start ended after five innings and six runs June 7. The Diamondbacks seem convinced Webb's injury isn't serious. Imaging tests earlier this week revealed their sinkerball ace suffered from a flexor tendon strain, an irritating condition head athletic trainer Ken Crenshaw said is improving daily. If the club keeps him off the disabled list, Webb's next start could come Friday against the Marlins. General Manager Josh Byrnes spoke with the team's medical staff Friday, but wanted to wait before deciding on Webb's next outing. "Obviously, this is a guy we can't be too careful with," manager Bob Melvin said. "He wants to pitch and feels like he can, but as long as there is soreness in there, we're going to go the extra yard to make sure he's healthy." Webb (12-4 with a 2.74 ERA) has been baseball's most durable pitcher, throwing 167 1/3 innings and three complete games. He's pitched fewer than six innings only once, a 10-hit performance against the Rangers on June 16. Despite the long innings, Webb's pitch count hasn't reached 120 all season. "Believe me," Melvin said, "he's one guy that we monitor very, very closely." Webb felt stiffness after his first post-All-Star Game start, a seven-inning stint against Milwaukee at Chase Field. He felt better five days later against the Dodgers, throwing eight innings, allowing two runs, but the pain resurfaced after his next two starts. "I've never had any elbow stiffness, so when this (started) I was a little worried," Webb said. "You know, everybody's always worried about Tommy John surgery and all that, so getting the MRI eased my mind."
