Texas A&M pitcher Barret Loux, the sixth overall pick in the June MLB draft, believed he had an agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks to sign for $2 million when he and his parents visited Chase Field in Phoenix shortly after the draft. Instead, he was crushed by a failed physical exam and ignored by the Diamondbacks, who appear to be leaning on a controversial compensation rule that would enable them to get a do-over in next year’s draft. Once Texas A&M’s season completed, Loux was invited by the Diamondbacks to come to Phoenix. The rule was implemented to give teams leverage when negotiating with highly drafted players who waited until minutes before the mid-August deadline to sign.
