标题[文法] 不定词作为补语的用法

最近开始复习文法，
但很多不定词的用法没看过，
常和分词或关系词用法搞混。
主要要是看这本：

（中文版是朗文文法全集）
遇到不少问题，网路上有的查得到有的查不到，
查得到的又有不同的说法，所以上来请教ptt神人。
（虽然很多人都说母语人士的文法也没多好@@）
主要是因为无法感受语感，
所以拿自己所举的例子来比较，
不知道有什麽差别。
（还是说其实一样意思，不同用法而已？）
请各位鞭策qq
以下各个句子的意思有何不同呢？
（第一句是书上的，其他是我举例的）
(1)
I woke up to find that it was snowing heavily.
I woke up and (then) found that it was snowing heavily.
(2)
He must be a genius to understand the theory.
He must be a genius understanding the theory.
He must be a genius who understands the theory.
(3)
They were the first men to land on the moon.
They were the first men that landed on the moon.
(4)
The only sound to be heard was a dog barking in the distance.
The only sound being heard was a dog barking in the distance.
不定词好像都是拿来修饰前面的词，
但好像ing又可以放？
有点难搞懂
