标题[请益] 论坛中的as many people as they can

各位好，请教一下
英语论坛中，网友Tdol说
Sometimes writers fatten up sentences with unnecessarily complex vocabulary
or structures to show off their knowledge instead of communicating their
meaning as clearly as possible to as many people as they can. Simple
communication is often the hardest- showing-off is easy.
想请问，倒数第二行的as many people as they can，後面省略了什麽重复的字呢？
我推测是：... to as many people as they can (communicate with).
请问各位看法如何呢？

hardest後面有个破折号。
（虽然我觉得应该往前一格，放中间，但不知为何，他们有些人就习惯直接放单字後面，
可能是为了不想和连字号混淆吧？）
