A longstanding rule of thumb for calculating sample sizes:
If we want to detect a departure, which is from the expectation that
"the joint effect of 2 variables is multiplicative",
then the sample size required will be at least 4 times than
the sample size that is needed to evaluate
"the main effect of each of the variables".
