The way I see it, unless you are a) my mother, b) the IRS, or c) my banker, you have no business asking how much I make. The question isn't even useful. If you ask me whether I'm single, perhaps it's because you know this nice girl who just broke up with her BF and is looking for a rebound. I'm cool with that :) If you ask me where I live, perhaps it's because you know the area well and can give me some tips on the best places to shop/eat around there. That's always good to know. But if you ask me how much I make, are you going to offer me money? I don't think so. Basically if I make less than you (or your son, your son-in-law, or whoever you're thinking about) you'll feel better about yourself and I get nothing in return. If I make more than you or whoever you're thinking of, then in your eyes I've just turned into a rich snob who probably swindles grannies for a living.
