In #7542 I wrote about whether to pursue my dream or stay with my reasonable life. That dream involves going back to school for a professional degree. I've now registered for the standardized test necessary for that type of school, and the test will be in October. So please keep your fingers crossed for me :) On a related issue I've been having a very difficult time sleeping the last nights since I registered for the test 2 days ago. I still have a full month to go before the test and I'm already second-guessing myself all night. I'm already 35 years old, and even if I pass the test and go to school, I'd be about 39-40 years old when I receive my license. I'm afraid it would be too old to start on a new profession... Also, here's the breakdown on the money issue. Stay at current job: 1) make enough to save ~$1,000 a month, great people, relaxed environment, good benefits, great weather. 2) no chance at advancement (small firm) but regular raises of ~5-10% per year pretty much assured. 3) for the rest of my life will wonder, "what if I went back to school"? Go back to school: 1) Lose the current income. 2) Likely rack up ~$100,000 in debt over 3 years 3) A chance (not a very good one) of finding ~$100,000 or more / year job. 4) If 3, job would be miserable but with good advancement prospects 5) if not 3 (i.e. not find a good job) then probably earn the same as current job, but now with ~$100,000 debt, job would also likely be miserable. Now I know why I can't sleep.
